چکیده

The study of molecular plant-pathogen interactions is a very active field of research in Canadian universities and research centers. This is not surprising given that the Canadian economy is tightly bound to food crops and forest resources for domestic use and export. The goal of this mini-review is to provide an overview of the excellent research that is being done on this topic in Canada. The availability of funding for genome-scale projects on model and non-model crop plants has led the field of plant pathogen interactions into a new era. The different approaches used by researchers in Canada to decipher bacterial and fungal virulence strategies and the research tools currently being used to study the plant immune system will be discussed. Relevant work on Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana benthamiana is included but most of the work discussed herein is related to non-model species. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Intraspecies Interaction of Fusarium graminearum Contributes to Reduced Toxin Production and Virulence.

Fusarium graminearum is a pathogenic fungus that causes Fusarium head blight in wheat and lowers the yield and quality of grains by contamination with the trichothecene mycotoxin deoxynivalenol. The fungi coexist and interact with several different fusaria as well as other plant pathogenic fungi and bacteria in the field. In Canada, F. graminearum exists as two main trichothecene chemotypes: 3-...

Lessons in Effector and NLR Biology of Plant-Microbe Systems.

A diversity of plant-associated organisms secrete effectors-proteins and metabolites that modulate plant physiology to favor host infection and colonization. However, effectors can also activate plant immune receptors, notably nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat region (NLR)-containing proteins, enabling plants to fight off invading organisms. This interplay between effectors, the...

Diffuse symbioses: roles of plant-plant, plant-microbe and microbe-microbe interactions in structuring the soil microbiome.

A conceptual model emphasizing direct host-microbe interactions has dominated work on host-associated microbiomes. To understand plant-microbiome associations, however, broader influences on microbiome composition and functioning must be incorporated, such as those arising from plant-plant and microbe-microbe interactions. We sampled soil microbiomes associated with target plant species (Androp...

Effector-triggered immunity signaling: from gene-for-gene pathways to protein-protein interaction networks.

In its simplicity and testability, Flor's gene-for-gene hypothesis has been a powerful driver in plant immunity research for decades. Once the molecular underpinnings of gene-for-gene resistance had come into sharper focus, there was a reassessment of Flor's hypothesis and a name change to effector-triggered immunity. As implied by the name change and exemplified by pioneering studies, plant im...
